The Lamb Takes The Scroll (Revelation 5)

  1. Revelation
  2. John’s vision (Son of Man)
  3. Letters to churches
  4. Throne room…
    1. Imagine a regular throne room
      1. King, guards, audience
      2. Imagine this magnificence
    2. One sat on throne
      1. Surrounded by beasts, elder, angels

Now continue…

  1. Don’t forget dual nature of Christ
    1. One on the throne (Godhead)
    2. One who takes the scroll
    3. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (Jn. 1:1)
  2. Note how this chapter emphasizes:
    1. His sovereignty as Lord
    2. The worship around the throne

And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.

  1. Book or scroll
    1. Right hand is authority / strength
      1. Right-hand-man
      2. Jesus sits there waiting for enemies to be made his footstool
        1. This vision shows that time has arrived
  2. Written on front and back
    1. Overflowing with info
    2. What we’re about to read
      1. Especially the seven seals (Rev. 6, 8:1-5)
        1. Judgment
    3. Shows a definite plan / set in stone
  3. Sealed with seven seals
    1. Seals used in legal documents
      1. A last will / opened at death
        1. Bound with string
        2. Witnesses put their symbol in wax over string
        3. Proves authenticity after death of giver
    2. Seven is probably symbolic
      1. Perfectly sealed / witnessed
      2. Only intended reader can open
    3. And so is this scroll only opened by intended recipient

2And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof? 3And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon. 4And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon.

  1. Strong angel
    1. Proclaims loudly for someone worthy
      1. Searching / challenging
    2. He is not strong enough
      1. Neither is anyone else
      2. None found anywhere
        1. Moses, Abraham, David
        2. Isaiah with purified lips
  2. Caused John to weep
    1. Because he is helpless to help complete God’s plan
    2. No heavenly advocate for earth
    3. No redemption or judgment

5And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.

  1. No reason to weep
  2. Behold, the Lion of God
    1. The Lion of Judah
      1. Messiah: “Judah is a lion’s whelp: from the prey, my son, thou art gone up: he stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up? 10The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.” (Gen. 49:9-10)
    2. The Root of David
      1. Messiah: “And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots. […] 10And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious.” (Is. 11:1, 10)
      2. Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.” (Jer. 23:5)
    3. He has “prevailed”
      1. Overcame everything; including death
      2. Victorious conqueror / Lord
  3. So someone worthy has been found to break the seals

6And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth. 7And he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne.

  1. Surprise
    1. The Lion is a Lamb
      1. As though slain
        1. Crucifixion / redemption
        2. God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.” (Gen. 22:8)
        3. Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year.” (Ex. 12:5)
        4. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.” (Is. 53:7)
        5. The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” (Jn. 1:29)
      2. Yet standing
        1. Resurrection
        2. Triumph over death
    2. Seven horns and eyes
      1. Horns are strength
      2. Eyes = seven Spirits of God
        1. For behold the stone that I have laid before Joshua; upon one stone shall be seven eyes: behold, I will engrave the graving thereof, saith the Lord of hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day.” (Zech. 3:9)
        2. Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts. […] For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the Lord, which run to and fro through the whole earth.” (Zech. 4:6, 10)
  2. So, the Lamb is in the midst of everything
    1. Shares reign with God
    2. Worthy of worship
  3. Worthy to open the scroll

8And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints. 9And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; 10And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.

  1. Imagine Jews’ first reaction
    1. Worship Lamb with harps (not “God”)
    2. Offered the prayers of the saints to him
    3. Underscores his divinity and worthiness
  2. New song

        1. For men of every nation
        2. Not just Jews
      2. Made us kings and priests
        1. Make them reign with him and Father as kings
        2. Give them access to him as priests
        3. Citizens of his kingdom
        4. Vindication / relief from enemies (answer to prayers)

11And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; 12Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.

        1. Greek gives us “eulogy” (“good word”)

13And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever. 14And the four beasts said, Amen. And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever.

  1. Every creature agreed and joined
    1. Sing his praise
    2. Forever and ever
  2. Beasts and elders fall in worship
    1. Emphasis on eternal nature

      7. Glorious
      8. Blessed

O sing unto the Lord a new song: sing unto the Lord, all the earth. 2Sing unto the Lord, bless his name; shew forth his salvation from day to day. 3Declare his glory among the heathen, his wonders among all people. 4For the Lord is great, and greatly to be praised: he is to be feared above all gods. 5For all the gods of the nations are idols: but the Lord made the heavens. 6Honour and majesty are before him: strength and beauty are in his sanctuary. 7Give unto the Lord, O ye kindreds of the people, give unto the Lordglory and strength. 8Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come into his courts. 9O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth. 10Say among the heathen that the Lord reigneth: the world also shall be established that it shall not be moved: he shall judge the people righteously. 11Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof. 12Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein: then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice 13Before the Lord: for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth.” (Ps. 96)
